Write a Song

A special occasion is coming up and you want to mark it. Maybe you're walking down the street on a sunny day and it feels like you'll burst if you can't express how good you feel. How can you say it in the best possible way?

Sometimes words just aren't enough to express how you feel That might be life's deepest frustration. When you need a way to connect, put it in a song. Lie down in a quiet place and bang it out. This one thing is all you need or care about right now. To keep things simple and focused, we are writing an upbeat song which goes best with a verse-chorus song structure.

Melody and Lyrics are the two components of a song.

1) The Melody - A melody is a natural thing. It is everywhere.A melody should feel easy. You may think it is hard to come up with a good one but it isn't, you only have to let yourself go for a few moments.

-Just a few notes will come first. That moment of elation is what you want to capture. The first notes lead to more which wants to complete the phrase. Play with a few modifying variations.

- Record the best of what you can come up with. Use any device but always have one with you when you are working on your song, if you don't, it will disappear like a mist in the wind.

- A musical phrase is very much like a phrase in speech, except that it demands to be repeated. Anyone who can talk can write a song. You don't need music theory.

2) The Lyrics - A song's structure is set by the lyrics. We are writing a verse-chorus song because it matches a happy mood, its the most popular and also the simplest form. That might be why it has been the most popular form for almost a hundred years.

-The chorus should be written first. That is the main idea, the point, the focus of the song. Be sure to stay focused on that one idea that you want to express. It's important to use active descriptive, colorful verbs and specific descriptions, following the line and rhythm of the melody.

- The song's title is ready made. Its the part of the song that stands out. It is usually the first word or words of the chorus because that is what people will remember. The chorus drives home the point of the lyric and it is repeated after each verse.

- The verses elaborate on the chorus in words and music. The melodies of the verse and the chorus should compliment each otherin the same way that the words of the verses explain those of the chorus..

-There is a big difference between a lyric and a poem, even though they resemble each other. A lyric should be direct, clear and to the point. Whether it rhymes or not is up to you but it should follow the rhythm of the music.

- Try to make the words fit the music as closely as you can;as the music rises, the excitement of what is being said goes up too, you'll find the chorus works better if it starts on a high note for this reason.

Study the song Maxwell's Silver Hammer by the Beatles. The happy, upbeat mood of this song has a weird effect when you realize the subject matter of the story about a boy serial killer. It makes for a fascinating study in contrasting effects. Notice how the "Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer..." of the chorus is explained and elaborated by the verses which move through time and tell the story. This is a feature of the verse - chorus which also tends to tell a story through time instead of a single thought or feeling such as the AABA form gives (see the song "Yesterday" for example).

The chorus is as simple as can be and right to the point. You have a song just as good in you. Bring it out
